3. Audio Exposure is High, and Voice Samples Are Easy to Find

Executives speak at webinars, company Zoom calls are posted on YouTube, and Viber voice notes circulate freely. It doesn’t take much for AI to scrape and train on your voice.

And once your voice is cloned? All that’s left is timing and execution.


How AI Voice Scams Work—Step by Step

Attackers typically follow a three-stage playbook:

• Step 1: Reconnaissance

They scrape LinkedIn for your org chart, study call patterns, and gather voice samples from podcasts, interviews, or even phone calls recorded without your knowledge.

• Step 2: Voice Model Training**

Using open-source AI tools like ElevenLabs, Respeecher, or Descript, attackers train a synthetic voice model. Some tools need as little as 3–5 minutes of clean audio.

• Step 3: Real-Time Attack Execution**

The attacker spoofs the boss’s number, calls a staff member, and issues a high-pressure request: fund transfers, payroll release, credentials, even client data. It’s urgent. It’s familiar. And it’s almost never questioned.


There Are No Red Flags—Because That’s the Point

Traditional social engineering relied on broken grammar, sketchy email formatting, or foreign accents. Not anymore. These attacks don’t feel like scams—they feel like internal instructions.

That’s why even the most cyber-aware teams are vulnerable. They’re not being manipulated. They’re being directed—by a voice that carries authority and trust.


What the Government and Industry Aren’t Doing (Yet)

Despite increasing incidents globally, the Philippines has no binding regulatory framework for voice-based AI fraud. The Data Privacy Act doesn’t directly cover AI-generated impersonation. The DICT’s cybersecurity roadmaps focus on infrastructure—not identity deception. And most local banks do not have procedures in place for voice impersonation claims.

Without clear legislation or banking policy mandates, victims are often left with no legal recourse—and no recovery.


Executive Checklist: What Business Owners Must Do Now

Waiting for regulation is not a strategy. Here’s what to implement now:

1. Lock Down Public Audio

Audit all sources where your executives’ voices are exposed—especially webinars, podcasts, interviews, and video call recordings. Remove, obfuscate, or restrict where possible.

2. Create “Dual Channel” Protocols

No instruction received via voice alone should trigger sensitive actions. Require written confirmation via encrypted channels or internal ticketing systems for all high-stakes decisions.

3. Mandate “Safe Words” for Real-Time Calls

Establish internal verbal passcodes—unique per department—for live voice interactions involving funds, payroll, or client data. Without it, the call isn’t valid.

4. Train Teams on Audio Deepfake Recognition

Include synthetic voice examples in all cybersecurity training. Focus on behavioral red flags: urgency, secrecy, and unverified instructions.

5. Engage Third-Party Cyber Surveillance

Work with vendors who offer real-time voiceprint monitoring or AI detection. These tools can flag anomalies before damage occurs.
